A few thumbnails trying to figure out how to do the whole wrap for the can, and how I can present the information as part of the design/ the room
of Cabinet of Curiosities. So far I have only done animals for this task, trying to hit home the element of wildlife and Cumbrian flares. I have yet to hit home the recognisable Cumbrian language and slang.

During the feedback with my tutor we discussed his trip to a small gothic looking apothecary shop, which had all of the subjects that he thought I would be interested in: Jars with creepy labels, taxidermy, specimen jars and so fourth. I had already explored the idea of making apothecary labels for the drinks, like you are drinking out of some kind of life rejuvenating tonic or maybe a love potion (which will probably backfire). Now the question was "How will I tie this in with northern elements?" I am not Cumbrian, I am not even English, so this project was daunting to me because I was scared of not knowing enough, and not being integrated enough in this culture to move myself in the right direction.
My first response was to do so in the title of the drinks, and make use of northern slang. However, I started exploring the possibility of including more northern visuals and animals that stood out to me. I did a bit of research, like going on the Cumbrian Wildlife Trust website and browse both the more rare creatures that live here, but also the most quintessential ones, like sheep and other farm animals. For example, I found out that in Roudsea Woods, an area in South Cumbria, there lives 350 species of moths, making Cumbria one of the most diverse range of moths according to the BBC. This was hugely interesting to me, since moths are one of my favourite creatures and it allowed me to include them in my designs. Secondly, I looked into Cumbrian folklore and mythology to see if there was anything interesting there I could take from. I did indeed find some interesting things, like the Thizzie Whizie, which is a small hedgehog with bee wings and a squirrel tail. I did also include some general British Victorian aspects to produce a range of ideas, as since Halloween is coming up I started thinking about the local ghost tours of haunted castles or manors. In the end I think I have an idea that is typical me. With the elements I have chosen, I cater to most age groups. It has edgy elements which would cater to teenagers or young adults, it has historical elements and a hint of sophistication, and cute animals for kids (since it is a soft drink). I have yet to hear the feedback tomorrow though. |

The work I have produced so far have been a mix of a few different ideas. The very first thing that came to my mind, something very basic, and "Northern Animals" was just animals with their respective berries and fruits. This was just my first instinct and was not really the direction I wanted to take. I then played around with some more botanical focused illustrations under "Floral" but was quickly bored with the concept. I proceeded to try stay more true to my nature and focus more on what I personally like the most, which is more Victorian gothic elements. I am trying to let myself be influenced by horror and apothecary labels as my main focus, but I yet I am tip toeing between more feminine beauty and the grotesque, which you can see on both "Victorian" and "Apothecary Labels". The feedback from my tutor was to stay true to myself, and really find which vibe I want to go for and go from there, as the concepts are already in front of me.
Actually.. Halloween is coming up... Hmmmm
